Beginner gardener filling a seed starter tray with soil

If this is your first season starting seeds indoors, keep it simple. The best beginner tray is not the fanciest one. It is the one that is hard to get wrong.

What makes a tray beginner-friendly

  • A humidity dome with vents. It keeps moisture steady while seeds sprout.
  • Drainage holes plus a solid base tray. You can bottom-water without flooding the seeds.
  • Medium-sized cells. Big enough for a few weeks of root growth, small enough to fill quickly.
  • Sturdy plastic. A tray that flexes when full of wet soil is awkward to carry.
  • Labels included. You will forget what you planted where. Everyone does.

Start small

One tray is plenty for a first try. Starting dozens of plants you have no room for is the classic beginner trap. Pick a handful of crops you will actually eat or enjoy, and sow two seeds per cell, thinning to the strongest.

Easy crops to start with

  • Tomatoes (cherry types are very forgiving)
  • Basil and other leafy herbs
  • Lettuce and kale
  • Marigolds and zinnias

Your beginner shopping list

  1. Seed starter tray with dome
  2. Seed starting mix (not garden soil)
  3. Plant labels and a pencil or waterproof marker
  4. A light source: a very bright window or a simple grow light
  5. A spray bottle or small watering can with a gentle spout

Rule of thumb: Light is the thing beginners underestimate most. A windowsill often is not enough, especially in winter.

Beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Overwatering. The soil should feel like a wrung-out sponge.
  • Sowing too early. Seedlings that outgrow their cells before it is warm enough to plant outside get stressed. Use our planting calendar.
  • Skipping labels. Once seedlings sprout, many look alike.
